The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) is shocked at the recent assault and murder of a 31 year old doctor in Kolkata, India. This incident has deeply upset BAPIO members, many of whom began their medical careers in India and have close family and friends in the Indian medical community. BAPIO also has long standing ties with hospitals, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in India, including via the BAPIO Training Academy (BTA), which supports numerous medical trainees across India.
BAPIO extends its full support and sympathies to the family of the victim and hopes that the perpetrators are brought to justice urgently. All medical staff, particularly women, deserve to work in a secure, supportive and respectful environment where there is zero tolerance for any sort of violence against them and there is access to safe spaces for them to rest.
