
BAPIO is thrilled that Prof Parag Singhal, Vice President and Honorary Secretary of BAPIO and CEO of BAPIO Training Academy (BTA), has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025 for his services to health education and to black and minority ethnic doctors. This is a richly deserved honour and recognition of Prof Singhal’s decades of dedicated work supporting Indian-origin and other ethnic minority doctors in the NHS, as well as enhancing healthcare training and education standards in both the UK and India.
Professor Parag Singhal is a practising Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust. He is also a visiting Professor at the University of South Wales, U.K., and an Honorary Professor of Medicine at Bolton University, U.K. Additionally, he serves as an Academic Advisor to the American University of Antigua, is a member of the South West BMA Council, and the South West Clinical Senate, an apex advisory body for the South West of England. Moreover, he is a member of the Global Nutrition Advisory Board of Herbalife. In September 2024, he was elected President of Bristol Med Chi, one of the oldest medical societies in the U.K.
Prof. Singhal has also been named in the list of top 50 UK doctors in 2021 and 2023, received the Excellence in Leadership GAPIO award in 2020, and was honoured with the Bharat Gaurav Award in the British Parliament in 2015. He was recently chosen for the prestigious Lokmat Times International Healthcare Excellence award for his contributions to Indian healthcare.
Prof Singhal completed his Diabetes and Endocrinology training in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he conducted widely acknowledged and cited research on Hepatic Glucose Production. This advancement paved the way for new treatments for Type 2 diabetes. In his position as CEO of BAPIO Training Academy, he has spearheaded the development of specialised Indo- UK training programmes to prepare health professionals for the challenges of the 21st century.
On receiving news of his OBE, Prof Singhal said: “It is a huge privilege to receive this honour and I am truly humbled. This award is a testament to the great work and support I have received from my friends and colleagues at BAPIO, BAPIO Training Academy and the Bristol NHS Group.“
